Saudi Arabia Refused U.S. Access for Hormuz Mission, Prompting Trump Threat to Delay Air Defense Interceptors
Saudi Arabia initially refused to let the U.S. military use its bases and airspace for Project Freedom, an operation intended to protect commercial shipping and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, forcing Washington to abort the mission shortly after it began, the Wall Street Journal reported. The newspaper said more than 100 U.S. aircraft had launched for the effort this spring.
The Trump administration then warned Riyadh that deliveries of critical air defense interceptors could be delayed unless the kingdom reversed course. Saudi Arabia later relented, but the clash exposed one of the deepest strains in the U.S.-Saudi security relationship in years, the Journal said.
Riyadh had argued that attacking Iran could shut the strait and rattle oil markets. The Journal also said Washington is weighing a smaller military footprint in Saudi Arabia and a shift toward Israel and Jordan.
