Supreme Court Blocks Trump From Firing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook
The US Supreme Court blocked President Donald Trump from immediately firing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, ruling 5 to 4 on Monday that the central bank must be allowed to remain independent while Cook’s lawsuit challenging her dismissal proceeds. The justices rejected the Trump administration’s request for an emergency stay of a lower federal court order, effectively allowing Cook to retain her seat on the Board of Governors as litigation continues. The court did not address the substantive merits of the underlying mortgage fraud allegations against her.
In a broader ruling on executive authority, the divided court also expanded the president’s power to remove officials at other federal agencies, overturning a nearly century-old precedent. The decision directly supports Trump’s attempt to dismiss an official at the Federal Trade Commission. Following the Fed ruling, Cook expressed gratitude for a decision she said protects the central bank from political intimidation. Trump, however, vowed on social media that the administration will take immediate steps to ensure Cook does not remain in a position affecting the nation’s financial welfare while the underlying case is litigated.
