Palantir Says Some US Government Customers Shift AI Workloads to Open Source Models
Palantir Technologies Inc. CEO Alex Karp stated Thursday that several U.S. government customers have migrated portions of their artificial intelligence workloads to open-source models, specifically identifying Nvidia Corp.'s Nemotron lineup. The disclosure, reported by The Information, highlights growing procurement shifts within the defense and intelligence sectors as agencies evaluate AI vendors on criteria beyond proprietary software.
Nvidia designs Nemotron models to run in air-gapped environments disconnected from external networks, a requirement for many classified defense projects. According to the report, Karp framed the open-weight models as competitive with closed-architecture alternatives for sensitive tasks. Government buyers are increasingly prioritizing speed, pricing, operational control, and domestic data sovereignty over raw benchmark scores, creating demand for US-made open models that sit between major closed AI labs and foreign stacks.
