Rocket Lab Agrees to Acquire Iridium Communications for $8 Billion
Rocket Lab agreed to acquire Iridium Communications in an approximately $8 billion cash-and-stock deal, pricing shares at $54 each. The transaction combines $27 in cash and $27 in Rocket Lab stock per share, valuing the low-earth orbit satellite operator at roughly $8 billion in enterprise value. Upon completion, the California-based aerospace company will gain control of Iridium’s global satellite constellation, critical wireless spectrum licenses, and more than 2.55 million active subscribers.
The acquisition marks a strategic pivot for Rocket Lab, moving it from a pure launch and spacecraft manufacturer into a vertically integrated space infrastructure provider. Iridium generated $871.7 million in revenue and $495 million in operational EBITDA in 2025, injecting immediate, high-margin recurring service revenue into Rocket Lab’s balance sheet. The deal also aligns with the rollout of Rocket Lab’s Neutron rocket; once operational, Neutron can launch and replenish Iridium’s satellites, internalizing launch costs that previously flowed to third-party providers. Industry analysts note the move directly mirrors SpaceX’s dominance model, where ownership of both launch vehicles and communication networks controls cost structures and refresh cycles in orbit.
The agreement adds approximately $3.6 billion in debt to Rocket Lab and is expected to close in mid-2027, subject to regulatory approvals. Following the announcement, Rocket Lab shares rose more than 12%. The transaction consolidates two major players in the commercial space economy, pairing Rocket Lab’s rapid launch cadence with Iridium’s established ground-to-space connectivity platform.
