GitHub Adds Kimi K2.7 Code as First Open Weight Copilot Model
GitHub Copilot has added Kimi K2.7 Code as the first open-weight model available through its model picker, expanding coding workflow options for developers. Kimi is a coding model developed by Moonshot AI that offers a lower-cost alternative to proprietary frontier models. According to GitHub, early testing shows the model delivers coding performance comparable to popular frontier models while allowing users to select it directly from the application’s dropdown menu.
The integration marks a shift in GitHub Copilot’s model strategy, which has relied heavily on closed models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta. Adding an open-weight model allows independent developers to examine and modify the underlying architecture, addressing growing demand for transparency and customization in software development tools.
