SpaceX $25 Billion Bond Sale Weakens Sharply as Losses Exceed $300 Million
SpaceX's recent $25 billion debut in the US investment-grade bond market is weakening rapidly in secondary trading, with paper losses for initial buyers exceeding $300 million. The selloff is so sharp that traders said they cannot recall a more severe debut spread widening for a high-grade issue in recent memory. Credit-default swaps tied to the rocket, satellite, and artificial-intelligence conglomerate began active trading earlier this week, giving the debt its first direct market pricing.
The secondary-market slide follows an offering that originally drew roughly $89 billion in investor demand, nearly four times the size SpaceX sought to raise. Elon Musk's company, which completed a record $86 billion initial public offering last month, launched the debt sale to refinance obligations and fund capital-intensive operations, including AI infrastructure and launch cadence expansion. Concerns over SpaceX's valuation, long-term cash-flow generation, and the broader high-grade credit environment are weighing on pricing, with an Allianz investment executive warning that the combined equity and debt activity suggests the market has entered bubble territory.
