Trump Administration Asks OpenAI to Stagger Release of GPT-5.6
OpenAI has agreed to phase in the release of its upcoming GPT-5.6 artificial intelligence model following a request from the Trump administration for a cybersecurity review. CEO Sam Altman told staff on Thursday that the federal government will approve access to the model on a customer-by-customer basis during the initial preview period. According to The Information, GPT-5.6 will first be rolled out to approximately 20 enterprise partners, with early access provided through Amazon Web Services' Bedrock cloud platform.
The staggered rollout comes nearly two weeks after the White House forced rival Anthropic Inc. to suspend its most capable Fable and Mythos AI models over national security concerns. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also reportedly cautioned OpenAI against launching the model without clearance from relevant federal agencies, including the Office of the National Cyber Director and the Office of Science and Technology Policy. The event underscores growing industry anxiety over the implementation of President Donald Trump’s June executive order, which established a voluntary framework for reviewing frontier AI models before they reach the public.
