Trump Orders DOJ Investigation Into Oil Companies Over Gas Prices
President Donald Trump ordered the Justice Department to investigate major oil companies and gasoline retailers, accusing the industry of price gouging for failing to lower pump prices in line with falling crude oil costs. The announcement impacted public equities quickly, with shares of Murphy USA (MUSA) and Casey's General Store (CASY) falling 5% to 6% in morning trading following the directive.
The probe targets retail fuel margins that have expanded significantly since crude prices began their recent decline. According to the administration, gasoline stations are currently earning between 40 and 60 cents per gallon as the national average sits near $3.90 per gallon. At a crude price of approximately $70 per barrel, immediate pass-through would place pump prices closer to $3.50 to $3.70. The lag stems from standard refining cycles, with higher summer fuel specifications and ongoing processing costs keeping refinery crack spreads and retail margins elevated.

@drjstrategyAs usual Gasoline lags. Oil companies are quick to jam up the prices at the pump when a supply shock hits. And are very slow to bring prices back down as the shock dissipates. President Trump is right to point this fact out. https://t.c
