Anthropic accuses Alibaba of illicitly accessing Claude AI model
AI safety firm Anthropic accused Alibaba of illicitly accessing its Claude artificial intelligence model using roughly 25,000 fraudulent accounts. In a letter to US senators and the White House, Anthropic detailed a campaign involving 28.8 million interactions between April and June, describing it as the largest known attempt at adversarial distillation targeting the company.
Anthropic alleged that operators linked to Alibaba’s Qwen lab scraped Claude’s outputs to train its rival AI model, specifically targeting software engineering and agentic reasoning capabilities. The letter outlined what Anthropic termed adversarial distillation, a method where developers harvest outputs from frontier models to train competing systems at a fraction of the cost. Alibaba declined to comment on the allegations.
