Lockheed Martin Wins $3.5 Billion Contract to Quadruple THAAD Missile Defense Production

Lockheed Martin Corp. has won a $3.5 billion contract from the U.S. Army to quadruple the production rate of its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, missile defense systems. The award expands output of the interceptor, addressing a manufacturing scale constraint that has previously limited availability for buyers facing rising regional air-defense demands.

The production ramp-up, highlighted by defense analyst Sergei Witte, marks a significant scaling effort for one of the most widely deployed short-range missile defense platforms. THAAD has been heavily purchased by countries including Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE to protect against ballistic missile threats. The contract will extend Lockheed Martin's backlog for the system, supporting its aerospace and defense operations as global defense spending accelerates.
