President Trump Signs Executive Orders to Accelerate Quantum Computing and Encryption
President Donald Trump signed two executive orders on Monday aimed at accelerating the federal government’s transition to post-quantum encryption and ramping up the domestic quantum computing industry. The directives establish a 2028 deadline for the U.S. to deploy a quantum computer capable of performing major scientific calculations and shorten the timeline for federal agencies to migrate away from standard encryption by six years. Under the second order, agencies must transition to quantum-resistant cryptography by 2031, down from a previously targeted 2035 date.
The accelerated timeline reflects concerns that quantum systems will be able to bypass standard encryption methods more quickly than anticipated. The executive orders mobilize several federal agencies to support the initiative, with the Department of Energy leading quantum computer development and others, including the Departments of Commerce, War, and NASA, tasked with deploying quantum-enabled sensors and networks within five years. Additionally, the Commerce Department has invested $625 million so far in national quantum research institutes, a move that coincided with gains in IBM stock following Trump’s praise of the company’s CEO at the White House signing ceremony.
