OpenAI Unveils Jalapeño, Its First Custom AI Chip Developed With Broadcom
OpenAI and Broadcom announced Jalapeño, OpenAI's first custom silicon chip designed for AI inference, the process of deploying trained models to answer user prompts. Designed from the ground up over nine months and accelerated using the company's own AI models, the hardware is currently undergoing sample testing. Engineering units are already running at production target frequency and power, executing live workloads for ChatGPT, Codex, and the API.
The launch extends OpenAI's operational model from software and cloud services into physical infrastructure, a strategic move aimed at reducing compute costs and reliance on third-party accelerator vendors. Broadcom Chief Executive Officer Hock Tan stated that Jalapeño delivers approximately 50% lower cost compared to conventional AI graphics processing units while providing better performance per watt. Early deployments targeting more than 1.3 gigawatts are scheduled for later this year through partnerships including Microsoft.
