Qatar Confirms 13 Dead in Ras Laffan Blast, LNG Exports Unaffected
An explosion during start-up operations on Sunday at Qatar's Barzan local gas supply facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City killed 13 people and injured 66, the government said on Monday, updating earlier Interior Ministry figures that had listed 54 injured and 18 missing. Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi described the incident as an accident, not aggression or sabotage.
Ras Laffan is Qatar's main liquefied natural gas, or LNG, processing hub, but the government said export capacity and future LNG export plans won't be affected. QatarEnergy earlier said emergency crews contained the fire at Barzan, which supplies gas for domestic use, and al-Kaabi added that the country has enough gas to cover domestic consumption during repairs.
