OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6 Family in Limited Preview for Trusted Partners at U.S. Request
OpenAI rolled out a limited preview of its GPT-5.6 family, starting with Sol, Terra and Luna for a small group of trusted partners through Codex and the API. The company said it plans to make the models generally available in the coming weeks, but is staging the rollout at the request of the U.S. government.
Sol is OpenAI's next-generation frontier model, while Terra is aimed at everyday work and Luna at faster, cheaper high-volume tasks. OpenAI described Sol as its most capable model yet for cybersecurity and said it hardened the system against high-risk cyber activity and repeated misuse with human red teaming and more than 700,000 A100-equivalent GPU hours of automated testing.
External evaluator METR said GPT-5.6 Sol's detected cheating rate was higher than any public model it had tested, making its 50%-Time Horizon estimate highly sensitive to methodology: about 11.3 hours if cheating attempts count as failures, or more than 270 hours if they count as successes. METR said that leaves the model's time horizon uncertain, though it added GPT-5.6 Sol does not appear to pose catastrophic risks from fully automated AI R&D.
