Trump Administration Moves to Restore Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 Access
The Trump administration is close to allowing AI startup Anthropic to restore access to Claude Fable 5, one of the most advanced general-purpose language models in development, according to Axios. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick notified Anthropic on Friday that the company could resume distribution of Claude Mythos 5 to more than 100 approved organizations. The Commerce Department's clearance allows Anthropic to redeploy Mythos 5, a model specialized for cybersecurity and critical infrastructure defense, to select U.S. institutions and federal agencies.
The partial license lifts follow an export block ordered on June 12, which suspended global access to both Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5 after national security officials raised concerns about the capabilities of frontier AI systems. Lutnick's department paused worldwide access pending a review of Anthropic's security protocols and distribution safeguards. According to the Axios report, negotiations between the Commerce Department and Anthropic continued over the weekend, with Fable 5 now expected to clear regulatory hurdles and become available to U.S. developers as early as next week.
