Leveraged ETFs Swell to Records as SK Hynix and Semiconductor Funds Surge
Assets in exchange-traded funds that amplify the daily returns of semiconductor stocks and South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix have surged to record sizes. The CSOP Daily 2x Leveraged ETF tracking SK Hynix surpassed the $16.2 billion Tracker Fund to become Hong Kong’s largest ETF, reaching approximately $20 billion after peaking at $24 billion. In the United States, net assets in the three-times leveraged semiconductor ETF rose to a record $35 billion, while total assets in US-listed leveraged and inverse ETFs climbed to $208 billion, reflecting over $460 billion in net exposure once leverage is factored in.
The rapid expansion, largely fueled by retail investors, has triggered regulatory warnings and comparisons to past market excesses. The Financial Supervisory Service confirmed that 16 Korean leveraged ETFs tracking Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix jumped from $3 billion in late May to $9.1 billion, with retail traders holding about 92% of the positions. South Korea’s top financial regulator stated he regrets not blocking the launches, cautioning that sharp price swings could now trigger around $4.7 billion in automatic rebalancing flows. Meanwhile, the benchmark semiconductor index trades roughly 65% above its 200-day moving average, a level only exceeded during the 2000 dot-com bubble, while chipmakers account for 19% of the S&P 500’s total market capitalization.
