Ebola Death Toll in Congo Hits 300 as Funding Needed Triples to $1.4 Billion

sciencehealthworldafrica 12 posts · 7 accounts

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed 300 lives, with the African Union’s health agency reporting that funding required to contain the crisis has tripled to $1.4 billion. The World Health Organization noted Friday that the epidemic recorded the highest number of new cases within its first month of any documented outbreak.

Health authorities are accelerating efforts to address the Bundibugyo strain, which currently lacks an approved vaccine. Scientists originally developed an experimental shot for this variant more than a decade ago after early studies showed promising results, but development stalled as outbreaks remained infrequent and funding dwindled. Researchers are now racing to restart trials as the WHO director-general warns the virus is outpacing the current response.
