Africa CDC Says Ebola Containment Funding Tripled to $1.4 Billion
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention raised its funding target to contain an Ebola virus outbreak to $1.4 billion, tripling its previous estimate. Jean Casey, the Africa CDC’s director for epidemiology, warned on Friday that containment efforts will require significantly greater international backing as funding pressures mount across the region’s health infrastructure.
The revised figure arrives as the outbreak in eastern Congo records the highest number of cases within its first month of any Ebola epidemic on record, according to the World Health Organization. In a separate briefing, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the outbreak continues to outpace the current response, prompting the White House to plan a request for over $1.4 billion in new congressional funding to support containment operations.
