DeepSeek has raised $7.4 billion in a new financing round after CEO Liang Wenfeng concluded the Beijing-based artificial-intelligence lab lacked sufficient capital to compete with Anthropic's newly previewed Mythos AI model. According to Wednesday’s report by The Information, the transaction marks a decisive strategic pivot for the three-year-old company, which previously relied almost entirely on Liang’s personal wealth to fund its operations.
Convinced that a significantly larger war chest was required to match the pace set by Anthropic in April, Liang announced plans to at least double the company’s headcount across all departments. DeepSeek currently employs roughly 300 people, and the fresh capital will fund aggressive expansion in infrastructure, foundational research, and product development as the lab attempts to close the capability gap with Anthropic and other global AI leaders.
