U.S. Says Iran Sanctions Stay in Place Under Temporary License, Funds Held in Escrow
Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Tuesday that Washington is not lifting sanctions on Iran and is instead operating under a temporary license while negotiations continue, with any unfrozen Iranian funds going into escrow. The clarification follows the 60-day Treasury license announced earlier this week, and Trump has said the initial relief would amount to about $500 million in American goods, with released Iranian funds used to buy wheat, corn, soybeans and other food for shipment to Iran.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio separately said Washington would not do anything to undermine the security of its Gulf allies in its dealings with Tehran, responding to criticism that the proposed peace arrangement is too soft on Iran. Together, the latest comments frame the current U.S. offer as temporary, closely controlled relief rather than a broad lifting of sanctions.
