India Sends 2 Ships Through Hormuz for First Time Since February, Oil Freight From Gulf to India Hits 9 Times Benchmark
India has sent two ships back to the Persian Gulf for the first time since February and they have crossed the Strait of Hormuz, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, told reporters on Tuesday.
Even with vessels moving again through the key oil chokepoint, the route remains costly. A supertanker was provisionally booked to transport oil from the Persian Gulf to India at a rate equivalent to almost nine times benchmark freight costs. The booking comes after days of disrupted and uncertain traffic in Hormuz: shipping data cited by Bloomberg showed only five vessels passed on Sunday, down from 26 a day earlier, before trackers later reported a rebound that was still below pre-crisis levels.
