US Authorizes Iranian Oil Sales Through Aug. 21, Says Tehran Will Readmit UN Nuclear Inspectors
The Treasury Department issued a temporary general license allowing the production, delivery and sale of Iranian-origin crude oil, petroleum and petrochemical products through Aug. 21 under the framework reached in U.S.-Iran talks in Switzerland. U.S. officials said the package also includes an Iranian commitment to free and open transit through the Strait of Hormuz and to let International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors, the United Nations nuclear watchdog, return to the country.
Mediators Qatar and Pakistan described the first 18-hour round at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland as setting a 60-day roadmap toward a final agreement, with technical groups on nuclear issues, sanctions and monitoring and a communications line aimed at preventing incidents in Hormuz. Traffic through the waterway has picked up but remains below pre-crisis levels and demining efforts are incomplete: MarineTraffic recorded 71 confirmed transits from June 19 through June 21, with a peak of 35 on June 20, and ship-tracking data showed about 6 million barrels aboard the supertankers Elva, Virgo and Vigor moving through the chokepoint early Monday.
