OpenAI Announces July Launch of GPT-5.6 Flagship Model on Cerebras
OpenAI announced Friday that its latest AI model, GPT-5.6, will launch on Cerebras' custom AI accelerator hardware in July. The GPT-5.6 Sol tier is the flagship version of the model, described by the company as its most capable released to date, with plans to achieve inference speeds of up to 750 tokens per second on the Silicon Valley-based chip maker's architecture.
The July launch comes as OpenAI rolls out the model through a highly restricted preview process following security requests from the Trump administration. The White House asked OpenAI to stagger the release of GPT-5.6 over cybersecurity concerns, limiting initial access to roughly 20 enterprise partners who must be individually approved by federal cybersecurity agencies. The staggered rollout mirrors restrictions previously imposed on rival Anthropic and leaves broader public access dependent on continued government clearance.
