Ukraine Strikes Oil Refineries in Krasnodar and Yaroslavl as Fuel Shortages Worsen
Ukraine struck two oil refineries in the Krasnodar and Yaroslavl regions overnight, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday, calling the attacks part of Kyiv’s long-range drone campaign against Moscow. The facility in the Krasnodar region, Slavyansk-na-Kubani, has an estimated capacity of 100,000 barrels a day and was reported to be burning out of control. A second strike hit a refinery in the Yaroslavl region, which processes around 320,000 barrels a day, though NASA satellite imagery indicated minimal fire damage there. The coordinated strikes come as Russia grapples with acute fuel shortages that have triggered rationing and lengthy queues at petrol stations across several regions.
Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed the attacks were part of a broader operation that also targeted a railway bridge near Ichok in occupied Crimea and the Titan-Barrikady ballistic missile development plant near Volgograd. Zelenskyy marked the strikes with Ukraine’s Constitution Day, stating they reduce resources supporting Russia’s military operations. In response to the escalating infrastructure damage and domestic supply bottlenecks, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced that the government will consider reinstating diesel export restrictions, will review gasoline imports to stabilize wholesale markets, and has reduced the minimum gasoline sales requirement for major refiners on the SPIMEX exchange from 15% to 10%. While Moscow’s defense ministry claimed it intercepted hundreds of drones, the attacks underscore Kyiv’s sustained ability to strike strategic energy and logistics targets deep inside Russian territory.
