Micron, Qualcomm Ignite $400 Billion AI Chip Rally
AI chip stocks added about $400 billion in market value after Micron reported revenue and profit far above estimates and forecast about $50 billion of fiscal fourth-quarter revenue with roughly 86% gross margin. Qualcomm also told investors it is targeting more than $15 billion of annual AI data center revenue by fiscal 2029. Micron rose as much as 15% after hours and Qualcomm gained more than 13%; Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 2.2%, SK Hynix jumped 11% in Seoul and Kioxia rose as much as 15% in Tokyo.
Micron, the largest US memory chip maker, reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $41.46 billion and adjusted EPS of $25.11, both well above estimates, and said tight conditions in DRAM memory and NAND flash should persist beyond calendar 2027 with no clear visibility on when supply will catch up. The company has signed 16 strategic customer agreements, typically running through 2030, that cover roughly 20% of its DRAM volume and a third of its NAND volume. Micron expects more than half of revenue to eventually be under those contracts and about $22 billion of customer cash deposits and related financial commitments.
Qualcomm, best known for smartphone processors, unveiled the Dragonfly C1000 data center CPU at its investor day and named Meta as its first major customer under a multi-generation collaboration, with the C1000 launching in 2028. Microsoft will deploy Qualcomm's high-bandwidth compute chips in Azure, and the company targets $5 billion of AI data center revenue by fiscal 2027 and more than $15 billion by 2029.
