Ukrainian Drone Strike Halts Moscow Oil Refinery Supplying 40% of Moscow’s Gasoline, Sources Say
Moscow's Kapotnya oil refinery halted operations after a Ukrainian drone strike on June 16, according to later reports citing sources, contradicting earlier statements from Russian emergency services that the fire had been extinguished and production was unaffected. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the overnight attack damaged a facility at the Gazprom Neft-owned plant, and OSINT analysts said an AVT-6 crude distillation and electric desalting unit was on fire.
The refinery, about 15 kilometers from the Kremlin, processes roughly 250,000 barrels a day, or about 11 million tons a year, and supplies around 40% of Moscow's gasoline and 50% of its diesel needs. Zelensky said Ukrainian long-range weapons hit the site from about 500 kilometers away, a day after one of Russia's largest aerial assaults of the war, and the reported halt would deepen strain on Russia's fuel system after a June 12 strike halted Tatneft's Taneco refinery and shortages spread to more than 25 regions, prompting 20-liter sales caps at some stations.
