OpenAI Hires Google Gemini Co-Lead Noam Shazeer as Lead for Architecture Research
Noam Shazeer said he is joining OpenAI after leaving Google, where he had been Gemini co-lead and vice president of engineering at Google DeepMind. OpenAI said Shazeer will serve as lead for architecture research.
The move shifts a prominent model researcher between two leading AI developers. Shazeer is a co-author of the Transformer, T5 and Switch Transformer papers, and he had rejoined Google in 2024 as part of the Character.AI deal, according to The Information.
