UK PM Starmer Expected to Resign Monday and Outline Exit Timetable
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to resign on Monday and outline a timetable for his departure, according to an Observer report echoed by other UK media late Saturday. The Sunday Telegraph's front page described him as ready to quit, though a government source later cited by CNBC said he remained focused on the job.
The reports mark a sharper phase in Labour's leadership crisis, which intensified after Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election in northwest England with 54.8% of the vote, returning to Parliament and opening a path to challenge Starmer. Earlier reporting said Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander had urged Starmer to set a departure timetable, even after he pledged to contest any leadership challenge.
