US Export Controls on Anthropic Put Foreign AI Talent in Focus

The US export-control clash with AI startup Anthropic has put foreign AI talent at the center of a broader debate over access to advanced models. After Amazon flagged vulnerabilities in Fable 5, the safeguarded version of Anthropic's Mythos 5, Washington ordered the company to revoke access for all foreign nationals, including foreign-national employees, and Anthropic disabled Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers to comply.

The dispute matters beyond Anthropic because OpenAI and other labs are watching for signs the crackdown could spread across the industry and limit foreign employees' access to top AI systems. Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark said the company is in daily talks with the Trump administration to resolve the security concerns around the two models.

Every decision is like this. It’s about bending institutions to their will. I think much more highly of Anthropic now that I did before.
