France Won’t Approve Lifting Iran UN Sanctions Without Broader Final Accord

worldiraneurope 715 posts · 110 accounts

France will not approve lifting United Nations sanctions on Iran unless Paris is satisfied with the terms of a final accord, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said, adding that France wants a role in the next phase of nuclear talks. Because any final deal would need UN Security Council endorsement, France, as a permanent member, would have a say over sanctions relief, he said.

The interim U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding that took effect this week opens a 60-day window for a final agreement, calls for a binding UN Security Council resolution and envisages ending sanctions on Iran, including UN measures. Barrot said the talks must also cover Tehran’s ballistic missile program and support for proxy groups, arguing that the nuclear file alone would not ensure regional stability.
