Germany Deploys 2 Ships to Red Sea for Possible Hormuz Minesweeping Mission
Germany is deploying two ships to the Red Sea as Berlin prepares for a possible military mission in the Strait of Hormuz, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Thursday. The minesweeper Fulda and supply ship Mosel are sailing through the Suez Canal toward the Red Sea as the US and Iran work toward signing a memorandum of understanding meant to reopen the waterway.
The move adds a concrete European military element to the next phase of the US-Iran accord. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that US forces would remain in the Gulf “for a while,” that the memorandum with Tehran would be signed within 48 hours, and that the 60-day period for a final agreement was not a hard deadline. Pistorius said any German participation in a minesweeping operation would require approval from Iran and Oman and would depend on further US-Iran talks.
