US Export Curbs Force Anthropic to Halt Mythos 5, Fable 5 Worldwide
The US Commerce Department imposed export controls that bar Anthropic from offering its most advanced AI models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, to foreign nationals, prompting the company to disable both models for all users worldwide. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in a Friday letter seen by Reuters that officials feared the systems could be diverted to foreign military intelligence users in China, Russia and other countries of concern, and cited a method for bypassing a safeguard meant to stop Fable 5 from helping identify software vulnerabilities.
The clash is becoming an early test of how Washington may police frontier AI. Anthropic says the suspected bypass found only minor security flaws that other public models can also identify. Reports said Amazon CEO Andy Jassy raised security concerns with Trump administration officials that helped trigger the restrictions, while Anthropic contends it was given 90 minutes to comply without detailed concerns. Senior technical staff were meeting Commerce officials in Washington on Monday, and a group of cyber leaders has urged the US to lift the curbs and adopt a transparent, evidence-based review process.
