UK Inflation Holds at 2.8% in May, Below 3% Forecast Ahead of Bank of England Rate Decision
British consumer inflation unexpectedly held at 2.8% in May, unchanged from April’s 13-month low and below the 3.0% forecast. Consumer prices rose 0.2% on the month, versus expectations for 0.4%, while core inflation was 2.6%, up from 2.5% in April but below the 2.7% estimate.
Services inflation accelerated to 3.7% from 3.2%, topping the 3.6% forecast. Producer-price data showed input prices rose 0.2% on the month, less than the 0.5% expected, while annual input inflation quickened to 8.7% from 7.7%. The figures come a day before the Bank of England announces its next interest-rate decision.
