UK Charges Captain of Seized Russian Shadow-Fleet Tanker With Sanctions Breach
Britain charged the captain of the sanctioned Russian shadow-fleet tanker Smyrtos with a sanctions breach, escalating enforcement a day after the vessel was seized in the English Channel. The UK also said it would announce fresh sanctions targeting Russia’s shadow oil fleet, finance networks and LNG vessels.
Smyrtos was boarded by Royal Marine Commandos after Prime Minister Keir Starmer ordered British forces to intercept the ship, in what the Defence Ministry described as the first UK-led operation of its kind in the Channel. Britain said it would also extend further energy support to Ukraine as Starmer and European allies seek to increase pressure on Moscow and push for renewed peace talks.
