Amazon in Talks to Sell Trainium AI Chips Outside AWS, Challenging Nvidia
Amazon is in talks to sell its custom Trainium AI chips for use in other companies’ data centers, extending a business that has largely been tied to Amazon Web Services and sharpening its challenge to Nvidia’s dominance in AI hardware. AWS AI chief Peter DeSantis said discussions with potential customers have already started.
The push comes as interest has grown in Amazon’s Trainium and Inferentia chips from companies seeking alternatives to relying on Nvidia GPUs. Some inference workloads have reportedly been up to 80% cheaper than Nvidia’s H100s, and Amazon has said Trainium already supports Uber, OpenAI and Anthropic.
