Money Managers Cut Brent Net Length by 94,763 as Hormuz Reopening Pushes Shorts Near Record

businessenergy-marketsoilworldmiddle-east 792 posts · 112 accounts

ICE data for the week ended June 16 showed money managers cut their net length in Brent crude futures and options by 94,763 to 114,128. Long-only positions fell by 20,182 while short-only positions rose by 74,581, extending a sharp bearish turn in oil positioning and leaving speculative short exposure close to a record.

The repositioning followed the U.S.-Iran memorandum signed this week to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf’s main oil-export chokepoint. Hedge funds and other money managers sold the equivalent of 95 million barrels in ICE Brent over the seven days through June 16, and speculative short positions moved to within 1 million barrels of their December all-time high. Gulf flows have started to recover since the pact took effect, with the US formally lifting its blockade on Iranian ports and Saudi supertankers and LNG vessels resuming transits, though traffic remains below prewar levels.
