Bitcoin Holds Near $66,000 After BOJ Raises Rate to 1%, Highest Since 1995
Bitcoin held near $66,000 and the broader crypto market was little changed after the Bank of Japan raised its short-term policy rate by 25 basis points to 1% from 0.75% in a 7-1 vote, taking borrowing costs to their highest level since 1995. The muted response contrasted with earlier BOJ rate increases that had coincided with sharp selloffs as yen-funded carry trades unwound.
The calm reaction suggested the quarter-point increase was largely priced in after months of signaling from the BOJ. The central bank said higher energy costs could push inflation above its 2% target, and Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida later indicated further hikes would depend on activity, inflation and financial conditions, leaving open the possibility that renewed yen strength could still pressure leveraged positions in risk assets.
