Trump Iran Deal Offers Tehran $6 Billion in Frozen Funds, Oil Waiver
Under the interim memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran on Wednesday, the Trump administration will allow Iran phased access to $6 billion of oil revenue frozen in Qatar to buy humanitarian and other non-sanctioned US goods, the Financial Times reported. The package also includes a waiver allowing Iran to export oil during the 60-day negotiating period.
The White House provided Congress with a copy of the agreement on Thursday, Reuters reported, and said the text matched the 14-point document read out by a US official a day earlier. Vice President JD Vance said the administration is confident it can temporarily lift Iran sanctions without seeking congressional approval, but said Iran would get access to frozen assets or the proposed $300 billion reconstruction plan only if it fully complies and changes its behavior. Trump separately denied the United States is making a $300 billion payment to Iran, while the plan referenced in the memorandum has been described as private-sector backed.
