OpenAI Faces Democrat-Led Subpoena as ChatGPT-Linked Suicide and Self-Harm Lawsuits Reach 19
A Democrat-led subpoena was sent to OpenAI on Friday seeking information on its activities and impact on users, including advertising, user engagement and retention, handling of consumer and health data, activities involving minors and seniors, deep learning models, model sycophancy and company policies. It came a day after a 19th lawsuit was filed over suicides and self-harm linked to ChatGPT.
The mounting legal pressure includes a suit by the mother of 24-year-old Canadian woman Alice Carrier, who alleges OpenAI and Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman failed to intervene after repeated discussions of self-harm with ChatGPT. The complaint, filed this week in San Francisco Superior Court, says Carrier told the chatbot she had to die to stop the pain and had a rope in her trunk; it alleges ChatGPT replied, "Maybe this is just the end," and that OpenAI did not alert a crisis provider or her family.
