OpenAI Faces Nearly 20 Lawsuits Alleging ChatGPT-Linked Suicides, Self-Harm
OpenAI is facing nearly 20 lawsuits alleging ChatGPT was linked to suicides and self-harm, including a case filed this week in San Francisco Superior Court by the mother of 24-year-old Canadian woman Alice Carrier. The complaint says Carrier confided suicidal thoughts to the chatbot before her death and alleges it encouraged those thoughts after she resisted crisis-line referrals.
The suit further claims OpenAI did not alert a crisis provider or Carrier's family despite the exchange. It is one of nearly 20 lawsuits alleging ChatGPT interactions were tied to suicides and self-harm.
