French Government Warns Hackers Breached Tchap App for Civil Servants Through Hijacked Account
The French government warned that hackers breached Tchap, its encrypted messaging app for civil servants, by using a hijacked user account. The disclosure turns an incident that had previously surfaced through unverified online claims into an acknowledged breach affecting a service with more than 300,000 monthly users.
Earlier posts had alleged a scrape affecting about 73,467 accounts, 643,459 messages from 876 rooms and 59,386 media files, or roughly 13.51 gigabytes, though those figures have not been independently verified. Tchap is used across French ministries, including Interior, Finance, Defense and Justice, making the breach significant even as the material provided does not confirm the amount of data taken.
