White House Pressed Anthropic to Pull Fable 5, Mythos 5 Before Export Controls
White House officials pressed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei in a series of calls Friday to withdraw Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and other tech leaders privately raised security concerns, then imposed export controls when Anthropic did not commit to pulling the models. The order barred access by foreign nationals inside and outside the US, including some Anthropic employees, and Anthropic said the only practical way to comply was to disable both models for all users; other Claude models remained available.
The administration has described the move as a last resort tied to concerns that Chinese actors or other foreign users could obtain cyber or national-security relevant capabilities. Anthropic disputes the White House timeline, saying it was given a 90-minute deadline, responded within 75 minutes and received no details on the threat; the company has said the cited jailbreak was narrow and non-universal, with capabilities already available in other models including OpenAI’s GPT-5.5.
