Trump Cancels Planned Strikes on Iran, Signals Deal as Stocks Rally and Oil Falls
Wall Street's main indexes surged and Asian equities advanced after President Donald Trump canceled planned strikes on Iran and said the US was nearing a deal with Tehran, easing concerns that the conflict would widen and threaten energy supplies. South Korea's Kospi climbed about 8%, Japan's Nikkei 225 rose more than 4% and oil extended losses on signs of a potential US-Iran peace deal.
The market move marked a sharp turn from earlier in the week, when the US and Iran exchanged strikes after the downing of a US Army Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz. Trump had already said an agreement could be signed within days, but Tehran had not publicly given a final response, leaving uncertainty over whether de-escalation will hold and whether risks to shipping through Hormuz will fully recede.
