Iran Declares Strait of Hormuz Closed, Says 2 Ships Were Hit; CENTCOM Says Shipping Continues
Iran said on Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz was closed to shipping, including oil tankers and commercial vessels, citing insecurity in the region after U.S. strikes and warning that any ship attempting passage would be targeted. Iranian media later reported that two “violating ships” were hit after trying to cross the strategic waterway, but did not identify the vessels or provide details on damage or casualties.
The U.S. military disputed Iran’s account. US Central Command said commercial ships were continuing to transit in and out of the strait later Wednesday and separately said no U.S. warships had been struck. A U.S. official also denied any naval clashes between U.S. forces and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps naval units, while saying strikes on Iran would continue.
