Trump Says Iran Asked to Halt Bombing After 49 Tomahawk Missiles; Tehran Denies Contact
President Donald Trump said late Wednesday that Iranian officials had contacted him directly to ask that the U.S. stop bombing, after 49 Tomahawk missiles and fighter-jet strikes had been launched at Iranian targets. Speaking from the Situation Room, Trump said the bombing would stop shortly, but warned the U.S. would escalate attacks again on Thursday night if Iran did not accept a proposal from American negotiators.
Iran’s state news agency and state broadcaster, citing informed and senior officials, denied there had been any contact with Trump and said Tehran would respond militarily to ongoing attacks. The latest exchange came after Trump held a Situation Room meeting earlier in the day to discuss potential new strikes, including a short, large strike campaign aimed at pushing Iran to change its negotiating position, according to Axios.
