Iran Outlines Draft U.S.-Iran Deal With $25 Billion Asset Release, Nuclear Curbs
Iran disclosed new terms of a draft memorandum with the US, saying it would secure a temporary waiver of oil sanctions and the release of $25 billion of frozen assets in exchange for nuclear and shipping commitments, even as Tehran said it has not made a final decision on the accord. A senior Iranian official said the draft would have Iran agree not to produce or acquire nuclear weapons, dilute its highly enriched uranium stockpile inside Iran under a mechanism to be discussed over the next 60 days, and immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels as the US lifts its naval blockade.
The new detail adds substance to an accord President Donald Trump has said could be signed on Sunday and that Qatari negotiators are still trying to finalize in Tehran. But timing remains unclear: Fars said political, legal and technical aspects of the proposal are still under review, while the Iranian official said the draft would require no uranium enrichment or expansion of nuclear facilities, and no new US sanctions, until a final deal is reached.
