OpenAI said it banned multiple China-linked accounts that used ChatGPT, AI-generated posts and fake social media accounts to try to shape US debates over AI data centers and tariffs, including efforts to stir local opposition to data-center construction.

The company said the network did not gain much reach and acknowledged there was a legitimate preexisting debate over AI and data centers. Still, OpenAI said the effort exploited existing divisions on the issue and could undermine US AI competitiveness.
