US Leveraged and Inverse ETF Trading Hits Record $90 Billion, Options Volume Reaches 107 Million
Activity in leveraged funds and derivatives has climbed to unusually high levels in US markets. Total options volume reached 107 million contracts on Friday, the second-highest reading on record, including 57.2 million calls and 49.8 million puts. On Tuesday, notional trading across US-listed leveraged and inverse ETFs hit a record $90 billion, roughly half the assets under management in the category. The 3x inverse semiconductor ETF SOXS traded more than 1.3 billion shares, the third-largest single-session volume ever for a US-listed ETF.
The figures also point to broad household and retail participation in equities. Retail investors account for 20% of US stock trading, while American households hold about 48% of their financial assets in stocks, a record and roughly 10 percentage points above the 2000 dot-com peak. Those readings come as US stock market valuations stand at their highest level since the internet-boom peak.
