Samsung Foundry in Talks With Nvidia on LP40, Rebuts Shift-to-TSMC Claims
Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor chief Jun Young-hyun said the company is in discussions with Nvidia over the next-generation LP40 LPU and dismissed rumors the production work would shift to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. The comments add to earlier reports that Samsung Foundry could return to profit as early as the third quarter after about four years of losses.
Those reports said the foundry unit’s breakeven target could be pulled forward from late this year or next year as 2-nanometer gate-all-around yields topped 60% in the first quarter and 2nm-related orders were projected to rise more than 130% this year. Orders tied to Tesla and Nvidia, sold-out HBM4 base-die volumes and a second-half ramp-up at Samsung’s $37 billion Taylor, Texas fab were cited as the main drivers.
