Trump Reveals Secret Hormuz Mission Helped Move 100 Million Barrels; Energy Chief Says He's Unaware of Iran Oil Seizure

President Donald Trump said he ordered a secret US military mission last month to support oil tankers and other commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz, saying the effort helped more than 200 vessels and more than 100 million barrels of oil reach the open market. The new account came hours after Trump said the US had been taking “millions of barrels of oil” out of Iran and had taken 22 ships “the other night.”

Energy Secretary Chris Wright later said he was not aware of the US taking oil out of Iran. Wright said US forces had helped facilitate some shipments through Hormuz and that tanker traffic had increased significantly over the past week, but Trump did not explain how that relates to his earlier description of taking oil and 22 ships. The comments come after the US and Iran traded strikes around the waterway following Washington’s accusation that Tehran downed a US Army Apache helicopter.
